I read with interest an article (in the sunday papers) on two ACS boys - one who bit his SJI opponent and another who stamped on his opponent's head during a rugby match. What was even more interesting were some of the reaction to the biting boy's two year suspension from the sport. Here are two of the more amusing ones:
"We should be more forgiving, to students. You don't want to use a sledgehammer to kill a housefly", Mr Terence Khoo, ex-national captian
"What do you ACS(I) players to do? Play ballet rugby where they hand the ball over like they're playing a game of musical chairs?", Steven Yeo, project consultant
I mean rugby, like football is a contact sport but to resort to biting and stamping is inhuman and is ridiculously unacceptable behaviour. Even in a much more violent sport like boxing, Mike Tyson's biting antics were not tolerated! Thus i'm surprised that comments like above can even be considered valid arguments! The problem is while we do not want to use a sledgehammer to kill a housefly (which bites apparently!), the housefly still must be killed! For goodness sake, it's just a two year ban from rugby Mr Khoo..not like it's a lifetime ban from the sport (big deal!), not like it's a lifetime ban from ALL sports in Singapore (so?) and not like it's expulsion from the school (now that's one big sledgehammer!)! And regarding Mr Yeo's unintelligent question about "what do we want ACS (I) players to do?", we want them to play like proper men and not like cavemen!! While we can do without the synchronisation and choreography of ballet, what we need is competitiveness and not cowardly and unsportsmanlike behaviour like these. To those who sympathise with the two offenders, i ask, how would YOU feel if you were the one bitten or stamped on? Happier now that you have bite and stud marks on your body to show off? Ivy Singh-Lim (ex-netball Singapore president) puts it best, "He should be punished..Just ban him for three to six months and move on".
Other interesting bits:
1. ACS won the match 54-3 against SJI.
So it was just a love bite afterall thanking the opponents for the big winning margin. Why else would you bite a loser rite? It's love la..that's what it is!
2. The ACS dude who stamped on his opponent's head got only a six match ban.
So kids remember this rule in sports..when you want to get rid of the opponent, annihilate him, crack his skull! Don't just bite him like a sissy!
3. ACS(I) is one of the top schools in Singapore
No surprise. Where else can your kids pick up life skills on the art of foreplay and/ or putting the stamps on!
*Note: This article should not be used as a judge on ACS dudes..i'm sure most of them are nice guys just that those two mentioned were a bit nicer than the rest and especially intimate. Who knows? They have so much hidden talent, the supporting actor in Tammy might have been an ex-student!
